Jack’s Angel (Part 1)

Jack Patterson didn’t see this coming. How was he supposed to know that getting a little “rough” with a suspect was going to get him transferred?  He had no desire to be moving to Houston, Texas, but it was either that or start looking for another job. Jack wasn’t ready to do the job search thing so when Captain Cooper at the police station where Jack had been assigned for almost ten years gave him this one chance to redeem himself, common sense told him to take it. Rule to remember, always look out for number one, no matter the situation!

In Jack’s mind, he didn’t do anything wrong. He knew that scum bag was guilty…hell everyone knew he had killed that pretty young girl…Jack just wanted him to admit it…fuck the lack of evidence. Captain Cooper said his hands were tied…the investigation into Jack’s assault was overwhelming. It was done right out in the open and everyone saw. Of course the suspect, Carlos, insisted he was innocent…but don’t they all?  Jack could picture it all in his mind as to what happened and there was no doubt to him that Carlos was guilty as sin! The courts would have let him go, and Jack knew it. A confession was the only way. Seemed like a good idea at the time, though Jack couldn’t for the life of him figure out where the idea came from. He had never done anything like that before and now with the transfer, it was unlikely he would ever get the chance again.

They not only moved him to Houston, they put him behind a desk…behind a fucking desk! Now all he could do was filter through stacks of papers and offer suggestions to the other “real” detectives. Jack was a good cop…his record was spotless and he’d received numerous awards for his outstanding accomplishments over the years. How the fuck can they do this to me, he wondered, it’s just not right. I get penalized and the fucking bad guy walks the streets. Carlos will kill again, but Jack will no longer be in Chicago to stop him.

Now Jack was stuck in the south…damn stupid rednecks everywhere!  Cowboy hats all over the place and the heat…oh my fucking God, the damn heat!  Houston is known for the heat and humidity in the summer. Jack had no idea it would be as bad as it was.  Stepping out the front door of his new Houston apartment, the heat took his breath away. He could feel the thickness in the air.  Air isn’t supposed to be thick, but it sure seemed like he was inhaling water into his lungs.  Jack stood on the steps for just a minute glancing around. Once a cop, always a cop! Rule to remember, pay attention and take note of your surroundings.  Jack slowly started walking to his car, a fairly decent 2005 Chevy Impala. White in color, if you could consider white a real color. Jack shook his head as he climbed inside the car…it looked just like an unmarked police car…how fucking typical.
