Jack’s Angel (Part 2)
Jack arrived at the new assigned police station over an hour later. Damn fucking traffic and the distance from point A to point B is ridiculous! Now he had to go sit behind a damn desk all day and pretend to be still be a detective.
Standing in the elevator on his way to the fourth floor, Jack towered over everyone. His six foot four frame almost always put him a head above everyone else. It was sort of cool to the ladies though, as they saw him as Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome. Jack smirked a bit as the elevator
came to a stop on his floor.
He arrived at his desk just as the phone was ringing. He grabbed it on the second ring, “Detective Patterson,” he said speaking into the phone. There was a slight pause then a soft voice spoke seductively to him, “Hello Jack”. A questioning frown crossed Jack’s face, but he decided to play along. “Well, hello, and who might this be”? The line went dead. Jack glanced up from the phone to see his new boss, a Captain Mendez, standing patiently waiting. Jack frowned again as he hung up the phone.
“Problem,” the captain asked. “Nah,” Jack replied, “must have been a wrong number.” But that voice…that sweet soft voice stayed in his head. The captain ignored his remark and got right down to business. “I need to see you in my office…Now,” he commanded him. Jack sighed and rose to follow
Captain Mendez back to his office.
The captain closed the door and told Jack to have a seat. Jack began wondering what he had done now. He started going over in his head the past couple of days. Nothing in particular came to mind. It had so far been a very boring couple of days and all he did was sit at his desk and shuffle papers. So he just sat there and waited for the captain to speak.
Captain Mendez cleared his throat and began. “Jack, I don’t know if you’re aware or not, but we are dealing with a new series of murders in our fair city. I know you had some problems in Chicago, but we could really use your…ah…ideas on this.” Jack sat up a little straighter to give the captain his full attention. “What I’d like for you to do is accompany Detective Monroe and Parker when they go to check out the crime scene. I don’t want you touching anything, and officially, you can’t do anything, but you can observe and report back to me your impressions of what you think is going on.” In exchange for your assistance, I will put in a good word for you and see IF I can get you transferred off the desk. What do ya say?”
Jack thought about this for just about five seconds before answering. “Yes,” he said probably too quickly. Rule to remember, Never appear too anxious! Jack took a deep breath and began slowly, “Is there anything you can tell me about the case?” The captain eyed him curiously but replied with what he knew. “So far we have two dead girls. Both have been sliced up pretty bad and we haven’t found any connection between them other than being young and pretty…and dead. Monroe and Parker can fill you in more on the latest vic. They’re getting ready to head out to the scene, so ya best get moving and remember what I said…Observe Only!”
Jack walked back to his desk with just a slight bit more spring in his step. This could be the break I’ve been looking for, he thought to himself. Waiting for him at his desk was Monroe and Parker. Monroe nodded as Jack approached, but Parker had to smirk and make a smart ass comment, “Looks like “Desk Boy” gets a chance to step out with the big dogs.” Jack ignored him thinking to himself…Rule to Remember…Never Give an Ass Satisfaction! He turned to Monroe. “What can you tell me about this case”? “We’ll fill ya in on the way,” Monroe replied while giving Parker a dirty look.
They made their way downstairs and out to the car where Jack quickly hopped into the back seat. Rule to Remember…Never Over Step Your Bounds Between Partners! Jack knew his place and he wasn’t about to cause any trouble. Monroe slid into the driver’s seat and Parker called shotgun. Once they were on the road…back out into the fucking traffic, Monroe handed Jack the case file for him to look over.
Jack flipped open the file…well the captain was right…the victim was young and pretty…and very much dead. The report says she was 22, long blond hair and what looked to be a very pretty face before the killer got hold of her. Her faced was slashed and limbs were separated from her torso. Jack stared at the crime scene photos in horror. Even with his years of experience, this was a lot of blood! Jack continued to go through the file and for no reason that he could clearly understand, it all seemed familiar to him. It reminded him of the scum back in Chicago…Carlos’ handiwork. Nah, that’s not possible, he thought to himself. Still, he couldn’t help but wonder why each photo looked like something he had seen before.
